Position Overview

Leading a team of 10-15 engineering and architectural professionals and reporting to the VP, Engineering, Building Code Manager is a people person with strong business acumen. A Building Code expert who is recognized both within and outside the organization as a thought leader in the area of Building Code engineering and consulting. The position leads department business strategies and plans and creates a direct impact on results; influencing business decisions; and solving problems that are complex and multi‐dimensional.


Key Deliverables

  • Provide senior level consulting services for highly complex Buildings such as high-rise residential, shopping malls, healthcare facilities, recreation centers, commercial and industrial facilities, airports, stadiums and transit complexes.
  • Review plans, provide performance-based alternative solutions to achieve compliance with applicable building Codes, standards and specifications.
  • Lead negotiation and resolution of building design issues with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for acceptance of alternative solutions that meet or exceeds the intent of requirements.
  • Conduct field reviews, attend project meetings with design teams, contractors, clients and the AHJ.
  • Manage, support, coach, and provide directions to technical staff in delivery of projects.
  • Excel client relationship management and be the central point of contact for highly complex projects.
  • Ensure that processes, systems, procedures, and technical guidelines are in place for the team to function efficiently and effectively. Make efforts for continuous improvements and engage other stakeholders as needed. Continuously advance professional and leadership skills to meet the demands of a dynamic work environment.
  • Participate in business planning and budgeting process, translate strategic goals into functional plans. Execute business plans and achieve financial objectives and goals. Work with leadership team and contribute to effectively manage the business.
  • Gainfully deploy and manage resources in a manner that provides team members a balanced workload, opportunity for professional development, and achieves an appropriate level of performance.
  • Develop productive working relationships that promote collaboration and professional fulfillment for all staff. Promote LRI’s prominence in the marketplace.
  • Promote Values of the Company ensuring that all key messages are consistently cascaded to the team. Inculcate a shared sense of cohesion in the team and create a culture that is aligned with the Values and drives the team to achieve Company’s Vision.
  • Mentor, coach, and train staff and help them reach their full potential. Review team and individual performance, set expectations, provide development opportunities, motivate, and help them achieve professional and business goals.
  • Conduct regular communications with the team and keep them abreast of organizational and professional updates. Ensure that they feel valued and part of the bigger picture. Proactively address people related matters and ensure well being of the team.
  • Be an ambassador of the Company at professional associations, conferences, and events. Pursue opportunities to expand Company’s visibility at these forums. Conduct webinars on technical topics of complex nature. Prepare and deliver professional presentations to on-going and new clients.
  • Develop and maintain great relations with clients. Resolve customer related issues and concerns promptly and professionally. Engage other stakeholders and resources as and when required.
  • Participate in ad hoc and special projects as and when required by the Leadership.


Qualification and Skills

  • A University Degree in relevant Engineering or Architectural discipline.
  • Professional License in Ontario
  • 10+ year of relevant experience in Building Code Engineering and Consulting.
  • Expert level knowledge of building codes including OBC, NBC, NFPA.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to visualize the global picture and steer local actions.
  • Excellent people and project management skills.
  • Ability to see real problems, manage conflicts, calling out the problems, and resolving issues in a practical and positive manner.
  • Ability to influence and build sustainable relationships at all levels within and outside the organization.
  • Exceptional communication, report writing, presentations, negotiation, stakeholder management, and workflow management skills
